The titanium case rises up around all edges of the flat sapphire crystal to form a natural guard for the display — a design choice born from real-world rugged use where the bezel takes the hits instead of the glass. The 2,000-nit display is two times brighter than any Apple Watch before it, readable in full sun, underwater, and at night via Night Mode on the Wayfinder face, which turns the interface red to preserve visibility in the dark. The larger Digital Crown has coarser grooves and the side button stands proud from the case, both designed for use with gloves.
The international orange Action button is the Ultra's signature control — fully customizable for instant one-press access to workouts, compass waypoints, Backtrack, depth gauge, flashlight, and more. For endurance athletes, it starts workouts, advances intervals in Custom Workouts, and moves through legs in a Multisport session covering swim, bike, and run with autodetection between segments. The larger 49mm display is the only Apple Watch capable of showing six workout metrics at once, and advanced running metrics include Stride Length, Ground Contact Time, Vertical Oscillation, and Running Power.
The Compass app has three distinct views — hybrid analog-digital, a data view showing latitude, longitude, elevation, and incline, and an orienteering view showing Waypoints and Backtrack. An 86-decibel siren can be activated from the Action button in emergencies, alternating between a distress pattern and the SOS pattern, audible from up to 180 meters.
For divers, the built-in Depth app auto-launches when submerged, displaying current depth, water temperature, duration, and max depth. The Oceanic+ app (Huish Outdoors partnership, subscription required) runs the Bühlmann decompression algorithm with dive planning, no-decompression limits, ascent rate alerts, safety stop guidance, and a syncing dive logbook.
Health tracking covers ECG, Blood Oxygen (on demand and background), heart rate monitoring with high/low alerts and irregular rhythm notification, Crash Detection, wrist temperature sensing for retrospective ovulation estimates, and Cycle Tracking with cycle deviation notifications. Three built-in microphones with adaptive beamforming and machine learning wind noise reduction keep calls clear in any conditions.
